Black Canyon Coffee, Tunjungan Plaza, Surabaya, Indonesia

A coffee franchise originating from Thailand made from 100% imported beans with true Arabica beans growing locally in their own country. With a motto, A drink from paradise... Available on Earth, was simply influenced by the quote, The best coffee is as black as the devil, hot as hell, pure as an angel, and as sweet as love!

'Cappuccino' (IDR38k = ~AUD$3.8) had a Bear latte art served with a side of savoury biscuits. All coffees being made generally depends on two things for me, one is the coffee beans itself and how they were brewed, and the second is the barista, the person making the coffee. Good coffee beans with a not so good barista can make your coffee very liquidy.. This time round, the coffee itself was quite strong which was a nice relaxation time for the both of us instead of having to continuously walk around the mall.

'Cookies n Cream Frappe' (IDR42k = ~AUD$4.2) has no coffee in it but if you would like some coffee with the frappe, just simply tell the person at the counter. The cookies and cream was not bad, though it seemed like they may have needed to add more cookies inside or maybe even chunks of Oreo cookies. Whipped cream is something I'm not a big fan of (the opposite of my Mr. of course, he just loves them!), so I told them while ordering that only a little will do.

Bistro Baron, Plaza Indonesia, Thamrin, Jakarta, Indonesia

Bistro Baron in Plaza Indonesia has been serving up classic French bistro dishes in a casual yet cosy setting. With the always so bustling and busy PI Mall, it never cease to amaze me how many of the restaurants gets filled so easily and yet even if you book in advance, you don't know if you may or may not be able to get a seat especially during peak hours or Friday nights and weekends. However, if you do feel like eating homestyle and bistro French dishes, do give here a try. They have a wide variety of dishes on offer on their menu though not too extensive until it will take you a long time to figure out what you would like. Serving from Breakfast to Dinner, they also offer High Tea for those wanting to have a nice afternoon tea.

Having seatings both indoor and outdoor allows diners to choose which area of the restaurant would suit them. We opt for outdoor seating as the weather wasn't too humid nor too hot. The only problem that I would have to point out here in this restaurant is that the lack of waiter's attentiveness to diners as it takes a while to try and get the waiters' attention as well as trying to call a waiter to your table. Some shouting or having to find a waiter yourself may be needed which is dissapointing and plus, it was a quiet evening when we wer there so it should've been easier but instead, it wasn't. I started with 'Lychee Ice Tea' (IDR38k = ~AUD$3.8) which was not too bad though it was a tad too sweet for me however after asking for a few lemon wedges on the side, squeezing them into the drink did make the lychee ice tea much better.

'Pommes Frites Truffee' (IDR75k = ~AUD$7.5) is a side where everyone can simply enjoy. Truffle oil scented french fries with grated parmesan served with a side of aioli sauce. To be honest, I did not really get much of the truffle oil scent and I felt that they were quite stingy with the grated parmesan as usually, there would be more. Crispy fries, yes but overall, it was just okay.

'Aglio Olio' (IDR115k = ~AUD$11.5) is a classic pasta dish where you can get in most Italian restaurants though the main differences would be how they present it, what its ingredients and condiments is included and the combination of each of the elements. In Bistro Baron, they serve their Aglio Olio with a choice of Smoked Duck or Chicken or Tuna in which we chose their Classic, which was the Smoked Duck. Spaghetti with olive oil, garlic, fresh chilli, rocket leaves and shaved parmesan is simple but already, it actually packs many flavours in just one simple dish.

Aglio Olio is always a nice simple pasta dish to have when you're not wanting that heavy creamy flavour nor the strong tomato sauce. What I quite liked about this was that although only olive oil, chilli and garlic was the base of the dish, it had flavour and strength which should not be overpowered in which it wasn't. The rocket leaves and grated parmesan added the crunch and the smoked duck, although it was only four thin slices (which they could've added a bit more to be honest), overall it was a pleasant and fresh dish to have.

'Bistro Baron Burger' (IDR105k = ~AUD$10.5) is Bistro Baron's signature burger in which you realise after reading its name. Usually signature dishes tend to either go two ways, one, it may be considered one of the best dishes from the menu or if it is just meh, meaning it's just a fluke or rather. Bistro Baron's Burger consisted of a homemade Angus beef patty, mesclun, tomato, onion with a seeded mustard sauce and Gratinated Raclette Cheese. The burger also came with a side of french fries though not topped with truffle oil scent or grated parmesan, only a sprinkle of parsley leaves.

What I have to compliment would be the presentation of the neat Bistro Baron burger as well as the grill marks on top of the soft brioche buns. I personally love slightly grilled soft brioche buns for burgers as I am not a big fan of those hard and dry burger buns where it just makes you enjoy only the filling but not the outer side as well. The brioche buns weren't too big nor too small, the grill marks made the brioche buns have that slightly toasted texture as well as crunch. When you slice it in half, you are able to see the burger's inside being carefully stacked which we as eaters can appreciate although in the end, whilst eating it, it may be messy in the end anyway.

The Angus beef patty was made well, full of flavour and juicy. It is hard sometimes finding a nice homemade beef patty which can be juicy and not dry as most homemade patties can easily be. Although a very simple burger as you may just call it a cheeseburger as it didn't have more twitches here and there and any add-ons but just simple. The crispy mesclun and the freshly sliced tomato created your healthy and crispy texture for the burger. The seeded mustard sauce was very light but gave the burger that hint of tangyness as well as creamy taste. Overall, a wonderful yet very simplistic burger well thought out and presented.

Geláre, Little Stanley St, Southbank, Brisbane

The word Gelare is an Italian word which means to freeze or congeal (the final step in the ice cream making process). What makes Gelare's ice cream different is that it contains no air as other ice creams would contain as much as 50% air. The interesting thing is that even if it contains no air, its ice cream is creamier and thicker than normal Italian ice cream.

'Super Treat Waffles' (Small: $12.3) which includes 2 scoops of Ice cream of your choice with fresh cream and syrup. We chose the Cookie Dough and another Ice cream flavour which I am having a mind blank of what it is. The waffles were cooked to perfection, hot and steamy even when we got it but cooled down easily from the ice cream scoops. Although it did melt it quite easily which was no good but other than that, these waffles are just great!

If you haven't given Gelare a try, do come in and maybe you might find yourself one of the best waffles in town. Also, with a wide variety of Ice Cream/Gelato flavours, you may take your time in choosing which flavour you should order. Their pancakes and waffles has different kinds of combo from their plain to their Banana Split Waffles or Maxi Treat and so on. Another tip is to come on a Tuesday guys, why? Because they are 50% off !! Yep, you heard me.. Half price! So score yourself a good dessert for half the price, why not right?

Cruisers Cafe Bar and Grill, Portside Wharf, Hamilton, Brisbane

Cruisers Cafe, Bar and Grill is a family owned and run business committed to deliver great food with excellent value. Located in Portside Wharf, it surrounds itself with the bubbly environment as well as free parking is also available which is great. Though it does not have the waterfront view but this should not direct you away from the restaurant as it is a place where you can have a family dinner, dates or even catch ups at. I have been to Portside Wharf many times before but have not dined at Cruisers before hence when given the opportunity to try their food and dine there, I thought why not?

Oliver Brown, Westfield Garden City, Upper Mount Gravatt, Brisbane

Oliver Brown, reminds me of Oliver from Snoopy although they don't have any relation whatsoever, but somehow it always reminds me of Snoopy. Hailing from Belgium in 2009 when two friends discovered the taste of authentic Belgian chocolate and was obsessed with it. This is a great substitute for you if you can't be bothered going to Max B or San Churros as it is conveniently located in Westfield Garden City which is great allowing you to have a coffee break or even just a nibble when you're tired or meeting up with friends or just had enough of shopping.
'Cappucino' ($3.8)
'Flat White' ($3.8)
'Grilled Banana Walnut Waffles for one' ($13.5) consists of a single waffle, grilled bananas, walnuts, vanilla ice cream drizzled with premium milk belgium chocolate. A portion for one was enough for us as we didn't want to eat too much since we just had lunch. So a coffee break was ideal for the both of us, not wanting to go shopping as much and plus, we were quite lazy I guess. Ordering the grill banana walnut waffles was just perfect and compared to the other desserts on the menu, this just seemed to be the one that caught our eyes together. One downside was that the whole dish just went cold quite quickly so do try and eat it quickly.
It is nice to see the grilled marks giving the smoky residue as well as smoky flavour.

Max Brenner, Southbank, Brisbane

Max Brenner, one of those chocolate places where you wish they would extend their opening hours. Sometimes when you feel like getting your sweet fix after dinner, it is sometimes rather hard finding a place to go to and now, the only dessert places that is open at night would either be at south side or west end and maybe the city but then, having an only dessert restaurant itself then omits many options. Always a great place to meet up with friends or during a date night or even with a family however do know that there are usually long queues during peak hours especially weekends and friday nights.

Brunetti, Lygon St, Carlton, Melbourne

Brunetti was on one of the places to go to for desserts or sweets on my list when we went to Melbourne. Since we were having dinner at Lygon St, we decided to go and find Brunetti. What we did not realise was that the queue and how packed it was. I had to wait for a while until the crowd had died down to even take a photo. Since Brunetti has relocated from its previous venue, it is now at least about three times the size they were before. Having a huge bar to serve customers coffee, tea and other sorts of beverages, it is a order-at-counter but then you do have to take it yourself when it's ready. Serving a wide range of cakes, pastries, savouries and more, it is sure to fit with any tastebuds.
Plenty of seating available however it can get over crowded sometimes and you may get a seat at the corner without any view.

We both were quite full after having dinner at Lygon St, but we just had to make some tummy space for dessert. We ordered a 'Flat White' and a 'Cappuccino' and waited as our cakes arrived.
'Sfogliatella' is a baked flakey pastry with sweet ricotta cheese and citrus.

Simply look at its many layers, the Sfogliatella is a unique, petite pastry dish you should not miss out on.
'Hazelnut and Coffee Torte' ($7.6) is an elegant yet unique cake consisting of a flourless hazelnut sponge layered with a mocha mousse dusted with icing sugar.
Although it did say it had a Hazelnut sponge in between the mocha mousse, it had also some sort of flaky pastry amongst it as you are able to hear the crack and also trying to slice or fork a bit was quite hard and not as easy as you would on a normal sponge cake. The mocha mousse was the highlight of the dish, it was not too sweet but it was rather just right. The Hazelnut sponge allowed the whole cake to have the balance between sweetness, density and also fluffiness. It was a great combination in having a Hazelnut sponge and mocha mousse, of course if you wanted it more simple, you could've opter for a vanilla custard or just simply cream in between but by having that mocha mousse allowed the dish to be taken to the next level.
This reminded me of Mille Feuille but not having a vanilla base or a simple thin puff pastry in between and to hold it altogether. Having the hazelnut sponge cake and the mocha mousse created an elegant dish as well as giving you a different taste rather than the traditional Vanilla Slice.
If you aren't up for either cakes or any sweet nibbles, there is a Gelati section at the end of the strip as well as some savoury items on the menu.
